ONS Data Reveals Frightening Spike in Halloween Crime: How to Protect Your Home

As the autumn leaves begin to fall and a chill fills the air, homes across the UK light up with the glow of carved pumpkins. The sense of excitement is tangible; Halloween is a time that’s enjoyed by children and adults alike. It’s a night that brings communities together, filled with harmless mischief and festive spirit.

But as the sun sets, a different kind of mischief can emerge. For many homeowners, the playful "trick" element of the night can escalate into something far more serious. This isn't just a feeling; it's proven year after year. According to figures from Aviva, the insurance company, malicious damage claims rise by a staggering 160% on the 31st of October when "tricksters take things too far". Although this covers a large variety of complaints it does include the festive favourite act of egging.

This alarming spike in vandalism and anti-social behaviour is also reflected in wider national data. Our own analysis of recent ONS crime statistics confirms a noticeable increase in reported offences during the Halloween period.

In this article, we’ll unpack the data behind this seasonal crime wave and show you how a simple, proactive security measure can protect your property, deter potential offenders, and give you the peace of mind to enjoy the holiday for what it should be—a night of fun, not fear.

A Spike in Seasonal Crime

While most people celebrate responsibly, Halloween night unfortunately provides a unique environment for certain criminal activities to flourish. The combination of darkness, costumes, and a chaotic atmosphere can embolden individuals to act in ways they normally wouldn't. Here are the key offences that see a worrying rise.

Vandalism and Criminal Damage

This is the most common form of crime. What might seem like a harmless prank can quickly cross the line into a criminal offence, causing significant stress and financial cost to victims. This includes acts like egging houses and cars, smashing pumpkins and decorations, keying vehicle paintwork, or spraying graffiti. The cleanup is frustrating, the effects can be huge and the feeling of being targeted can leave homeowners feeling vulnerable. criminal damage has gotten so bad n recent years that in 2023 police put out an official statement to retailers not to sell eggs or flour to young people.

Stalking and Harassment

The anonymity granted by masks and costumes can have a sinister side. For some, it becomes a tool for intimidation and harassment. This can range from persistent, following and threatening behaviour on the streets to more targeted campaigns against individuals. This type of victim-based crime is particularly distressing as it’s deeply personal.

Burglary

Thieves view Halloween as a golden opportunity. With many families out trick-or-treating and noise levels high, burglars can operate under the perfect cover. An empty, house on a busy street becomes an easy target. The general commotion allows them to scout properties and break in without drawing the attention they would on any other night of the year.

Why Do Crime Rates Rise on Halloween?

Several factors converge on the 31st of October to create a "perfect storm" for criminal behaviour:

  • Anonymity: Masks and costumes make it incredibly difficult to identify offenders, giving them the confidence to act without fear of immediate consequences.
  • Cover of Darkness: As an autumn festival, celebrations take place during the long, dark evening hours, providing ample cover for illegal activities.
  • Noise and Distraction: The unusual level of noise and foot traffic makes it hard for communities to distinguish between festive fun and anti-social behaviour.
  • Increased Alcohol and Drug Use: Halloween parties often involve use of alcohol and recreational drugs. This lowers inhibitions, impairs judgment, and can directly contribute to aggressive behaviour, mindless vandalism, and other impulsive crimes.

This is not just a problem in the UK either, a Northeastern University professor claims that violent crimes increase by as much as 50% on Halloween across the US as well.

Analysing the Official Data

The sense that crime increases around this time is confirmed by official government statistics. We've analysed the ONS (Office for National Statistics) crime data for England and Wales over the last two years, and it reveals a consistent and worrying trend. The numbers clearly show that the period around Halloween sees a significant spike in offences that directly impact homeowners and families. Let's break down the official figures.

A Surge in Victim-Based Crime as a Whole

When looking at victim-based crime as a whole—which includes everything from theft to assault—the data shows a distinct seasonal rise. But who are the victims in this scenario? Well, it’s not just individuals being targeted. According to Get Licensed, a professional security training provider, each year, there is a 40% to 50% increase in criminal activity on businesses during Halloween.

The combined average for October and November 2024 saw 377,536 reported incidents.

This is a sharp increase from the average of the months on either side (September and December), which was 361,913.

That's an increase of 15,623 victim-based crimes during the lead up and cooldown of Halloween.

Burglary on the Rise

The longer, darker nights of October provide the perfect cover for thieves. The data shows a clear pattern of burglars taking advantage of this:

In October 2023, there were 23,571 burglaries reported, a jump of over 7.5% from the 21,912 incidents in September.

This pattern repeated in 2024, with burglaries rising from 20,394 in September to 21,912 in October—another increase of over 7%.

Cases Compared to the Christmas Period

Many assume the festive season is the peak time for crime, but the data shows Halloween is actually worse for certain offences.

Harassment and Stalking: In 2023, there were 54,120 cases in October compared to just 47,384 in December. The trend continued in 2024, with 49,908 cases in October versus 46,205 in December. This shows thousands more cases of personal intimidation occur around Halloween than Christmas.

Criminal Damage & Vandalism: This category shows the most dramatic change. In 2023, October saw 40,996 acts of vandalism, nearly 5,000 more than the 36,177 in December. Similarly, in 2024, the figures were 37,775 for October compared to only 33,971 in December.

How CCTV Makes a Difference

The statistics paint a grim picture, but you don't have to be a part of them. Modern security technology lets you turn your home from a potential target into a safety zone. A professional CCTV system is no longer just a passive recording device; it’s a proactive, intelligent defence system that works to deter criminals before they can act. You can find the statistics on how well CCTV actually deters intruders here.

Let’s walk through a possible Halloween night scenario to see how this technologies work together.

Infrared (IR)

It’s late. The last of the trick-or-treaters have gone home, and the street is filled with muffled noise from a party down the road. You've armed your CCTV for the night, which is currently using its standard infrared (IR) night vision. In this mode, it surveys your property, recording clear black-and-white footage even in complete darkness. This is your baseline—a constant eye that misses nothing.

Smart Dual Illumination

A hooded figure turns onto your path and begins to walk up your driveway, testing to see if anyone is watching. The moment they cross a designated threshold; the camera’s intelligent motion detector is triggered.

Instantly, a powerful white LED light floods the area in bright, clear light. This means 2 things:

The Intruder is Startled: They are immediately exposed. Their cover of darkness is gone, and they know they are being watched. Instinctively they look up to see where the light is coming from allowing you to identify their face.

You Get Clearer Evidence: The camera switches from black-and-white IR to full, vivid colour. This makes identification all the more likely, capturing the exact colour of their clothing and other features that would be lost in a standard monochrome image.

Many criminals will change their mind at this point alone. Together with IR this is known as Colour night 2.0 by SPRO. Explore our range of cameras with advanced smart dual illumination to see the difference for yourself.

Two Way Audio

But what if the intruder is more determined? They hesitate for a moment before continuing towards your front door or a vulnerable window. This is when your system escalates from passive monitoring to reactive defences.

As they get too close, the camera’s next defences are triggered. A loud siren is emitted from the camera drawing huge amounts of attention to your property. Neighbours are awoken and are peering out their window, you can now open up your phone to activate two-way audio and confront the intruder without the danger of having to leave the property.

Some brands (like SPRO) also include red and blue flashing lights that trigger along with the siren, mimicking police lights as a further deterrence.

The combination of being caught in a spotlight, the alarming flashing lights, and a direct vocal warning creates an intimidating and highly public incident. Reolink products offer this feature as their accurately named “double warning”, offering a white light and audio projection. SPRO also offer this technology and call it Active Deterrence, which gives you the two-way audio, sirens, pre-recorded messages, and the strobe lights.

Halloween should be about fun, not fear. It’s a time for spooky decorations, creative costumes, and sharing treats with the community. Yet, as we've seen, the cover of darkness and festive chaos can unfortunately bring out a more sinister side, leaving many homeowners feeling vulnerable.

We’ve established that this isn't just a claim. The official ONS data confirms a clear and worrying spike in crimes like vandalism, burglary, and harassment during this time on both domestic properties and business. The statistics show thousands more offences occur in October compared to the months surrounding it, proving that the threat to property and personal safety is very real.

But you have the power to ensure your home isn't a part of these statistics. Modern CCTV is far more than a simple camera; it's a proactive system.
